Jimi Hocking's guitars ..
I recently found a handbill for a gig I played in 1981. It is hard to believe that I have been working as a guitarist now for nearly 30 years! And that whole time I have been consumed with my fascination for guitars.
I was always hanging around guitar shops and worked in one or two as I was paying my dues. Some of the guitars I acquired back then were not yet 'vintage' they were simply 'second hand' and I'm sure I couldn't pay the current asking prices for them.
I have some great guitars, and they are all meant to be played. However, I can recall going without many material comforts to sustain my 'GAS' (Guitar Acquisition Syndrome). My early electrics were a budget Washburn TV style electric and a Cimar Strat copy, until I eventually saved enough money for a Les Paul around '83 or '84.
The Les Paul has remained my preferred guitar ever since, although I have other essential instruments that I love to use for different sounds and situations. I spend a lot of time on my PRS, and for a number of years favoured hollow bodies, playing a Gibson 125-T and my Yamaha AEX.
